5 Things Your Makeup/Hair Artist Wants You to Know

When it comes to receiving a service, there is always some level of preparation needed from a client prior to arriving to an appointment. Whether it’s a washed and clean face or hair, it’s important to understand and follow these 5 guidelines from your trusted Detroit, Michigan Makeup Artist and Hairstylist to get the most out of your appointment!

# 1

When booking a makeup appointment, it is important to arrive with a freshly washed, makeup free face (not even a little makeup residue from the night before). The biggest reason is due to time constraints of having to remove old makeup before applying new makeup. Things take time and if you or your artist are on a time crunch, part of your appointment will be spent removing old makeup giving less time for your actual makeup application.

No products should be used on your skin prior to a makeup appointment aside from a moisturizer (a water-based moisturizer is recommended). The reason being is because the skincare products you use may not work well with the skincare and makeup products an artist has and will use on you. Using two different formulations such as a silicone based-product with a water based-product will not turn on well – think oil and water, yikes!

When booking a hairstyling appointment, be sure your hair is freshly washed and it is completely 100% dry, blown out straight (unless you have natural curly hair that you want to put up into a style or otherwise stated by your artist). Hair can be washed and blown out straight the night before. We emphasize “dry” as we have experienced clients who have come in with half air-dried hair from the night before…carrying a less than pleasant odor. If you have oily hair, it is highly recommended to wash hair the morning of for best styling results. Greasy, dirty hair weights your style down - it's a myth that dirty hair holds styles better.

Share inspiration photos of the makeup or hairstyling you have in mind. Inspiration photos can serve as crucial part of your consultation especially if there is a particular look you’re after. Photos will allow your artist to visually gain an understanding of your vision and provide you the look you’re seeking. Specifically, when it comes to hairstyling, sharing photos of yourself and the current state of your hair prior to your appointment is extremely helpful. If your hair is fine and doesn't hold a curl, Hollywood waves may not be in your future.

Be sure to arrive to your appointment on time. When you book an appointment, you are reserving a specific time slot with your artist. Arriving late to an appointment may result in a rushed or cancelled appointment due to time constraints and/or other bookings. If you are going to be late, give your artist a call/text to let them know – we get it, things happen. A heads up is not only a kind gesture, but it also allows your artist to possibly make last minute adjustments to accommodate your late arrival.
